Martin Boyce

Born in Glasgow in 1967, Martin Boyce is well known for his sculptural installations that recall and reference conventional public spaces - the playground, pedestrian subway, discarded or abandoned recreational sites - to form a cohesive and immersive environment, imagined or dreamed, one that the writer Will Bradley calls, "both a proposition about social space and a dreamscape in itself." Individual works comprising sculptural forms recall conventional public furniture; benches, bins, signage and lighting.

Drawing on the iconography and subsequent production of modernist design, these objects take on an alternative life by being displaced from their original context and purpose.

Martin Boyce lives and works in Glasgow. Most recent solo exhibitions and public projects include: 'We Are Shipwrecked and Landlocked', Kaldor Art Projects, Melbourne (2008); Ikon Gallery, Birmingham (2008); Münster Sculpture Project, Münster (2008); 'We Burn, We Shiver' (with Ugo Rondinone), Sculpture Centre, New York (2008). Forthcoming exhibitions: 'No Reflections', Dundee Contemporary Arts, Scotland December 12 2009 - February 14 2010.

A limited edition publication by Martin Boyce and published by DCA, to accompany the exhibition will be available for Scotland + Venice 2009. For more information please see the Limited Edition Print and Bookwork page.
