Drawing the Intangible – Environmental Observations of the City

Work on display at the Lighthouse, Glasgow

The proposed research aims to construct new tools for observing, recording and experiencing the relationship between architecture and place. Developing beyond a simplified representation of locale, this research seeks to examine the role of architecture and environment in the choreography of daily life. The cumulative production of two and three dimensional drawings, recordings and observational apparatus will be constructed into a series of installation based exhibitions and participatory environments during both the Fellowship period in Venice and upon returning to Scotland. Through rendering legible our sensory perception of environmental phenomena in the context of Venice’s urban fabric, the intention is to construct an ‘atlas of the intangible’. This atlas will mediate between objective and subjective experience aiming to (re)examine and (re)define our collective comprehension and occupation of Venice.
